Subhadra Channa Subhadra Channa

Prof. Subhadra Mitra  Channa teaches Social Anthropology at the University of Delhi. She holds a Ph.d Degree from Delhi University and has been interested in the study of marginal groups in Indian society, including those belonging to the Dalits, tribes and women as a category. Her specialization ranges over gender studies, religion and ecology, border studies along with anthropological theory and methodology.

She has been the recipient of several international fellowships. She was a Charles Wallace Fellow to U.K. and a Visiting Professor to MSH, Paris apart from being a Fulbright visiting lecturer to USA in Autumn, 2003 and a Fulbright Scholar in Residence (Visiting Prof) to university of South Carolina for the year 2008-2009.  In 2012 she was a visiting professor to the University of Kentucky in USA. She received the S.C. Roy Memorial Gold Medal from the Asiatic Society in 2011 for a life time contribution to Cultural Anthropology. She is widely traveled and has been invited to Japan, South Africa, Italy, East Africa, China, Heidelberg and Oxford University, to present papers and attend various seminars. She gave the Key Note Address at the IUAES Congress in Kunming, China in 2009.

She has written about fifty scholarly papers published in reputed journals and books across the world and has had her important papers translated into Japanese and Polish languages. She is the author of four books (two edited) and has edited two encyclopedias. She was the President of the Indian Anthropological Association and currently is Editor of The Indian Anthropologist, the Journal of the Association. She has been a visiting professor to the universities of Calcutta, Hyderabad, North Bengal and Kannaur (Kerala). She is the Chair of the Commission on the Anthropology of Women (IUAES), an international body from July 2009 and she was the Co-Chair for the same from 2001-2009.  She was on the editorial board of JRAI (The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute) till Dec, 2010 and is now on the editorial board of the journal Religion and Society. Her new publications include the edited book, Looking up at Caste,  Sage publications, The Inner and the Outer Selves: Cosmology, Gender and Ecology on the Himalayan Borders ,Oxford University Press, Gender in South Asia, Cambridge University Press and Gendering Material Culture, co-edited with K.K. Misra ( a  Museum of Man, Bhopal, publication).
